This House is Sick of the Welfare State

Facebook Event

Do we live in a society of spongers or should we help those down on their luck? Come along to the Phil this Thursday night at 7.30pm for what will undoubtedly be a rowdy debate on one of the most controversial issues of our time. To be followed by a generous reception

The crème de la crème of the Phil’s student speakers will feature, an International MACE winner and multiple Irish Times finalists among them! They will be taking on the following guests:

PROPOSITION

Dr Eamonn Butler – libertarian economist, Co-Founder and Director of the Adam Smith Institute, author and broadcaster on social and economic issues.
Tony Allwright – consultant, social and political commentator (check out his controversial blog – http://www.tallrite.com/blog.htm )

OPPOSITION
Patrick Nulty TD – Described as a ‘Labour rebel’ by the Irish Independent, Nulty is a passionate leftist who lost the Labour whip for voting against VAT increases in the 2012 budget. He now sits in the Dail as an Independent TD.
Prof Virpi Timonen – A Trinity fellow, Prof Timonen specialises in the politics of the welfare state and the organisation of care for the elderly in ageing populations.

With RTE’s Brian Dobson in the Chair
